Botanical Garden
RUAZENHE

How it came to be

History

The garden is almost ninety years old. It grew together with Azerbaijani science — from the first plantings of the 1930s to the great restoration of our day.

The Baku Botanical Garden was created not as a place of leisure but as a scientific base for studying the plants of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus. It lives by that task to this day.

History

Beginnings in the 1930s

On 3 July 1934 about 80–100 hectares of watered land were allotted for the Botanical Garden and the Institute of Botany. The garden itself was founded in 1936 and became a scientific centre for the study of flora.

From the very start it was created under the Academy of Sciences: here plants were not only grown but also researched, collected and used to train specialists.

A revival of our day

In time the garden needed renewal. In autumn 2024, after a major restoration, it opened its doors to visitors again — with renewed avenues, infrastructure and displays.

The restoration returned the garden to a well-kept look while preserving its main role — a scientific institution and a green oasis of the capital.
